Gardening for wildlife – free brochure launched

Gardening for wildlife – free brochure launched

Life on The Edge (Lote) the Heritage Lottery funded project led by South Devon National Landscape is working with partners to restore a coastline buzzing with wildlife. To help improve habitats Lote   is giving away  1000 copies of the ‘Gardening for Wildlife ‘brochures   from next week   – written and produced by the skilled volunteers at The Habitat Group, with distribution is enabled through Brixham Community Partnership.  Copies can be collected from one of Brixham’s community venues.  The list of stockists is here:: https://southdevon-nl.org.uk/wildlife-gardening/

Other opportunities to get involved include the following events:

    • A community walk on Berry Head on 7th May, with Sam, Lote’s Conservation Officer, enjoying the coastal landscape and spotting invertebrates and wildflowers along the route.
    • A learning and doing session on 14th May about insect surveying and recording.  Sam will be helping everyone to  spot invertebrates and how to record sightings that can be contributed to the national record.

Life on the Edge’s Wildlife Gardening (Brixham) project is excited to be working with a number of community partners to really engage the people of Brixham in the idea of creating small but invaluable wildlife havens throughout the town. It’s widely understood that small islands of habitat are of relatively poor wildlife benefit compared with the larger tracts of habitat needed, but when those small islands are in large numbers across a relatively small area, that’s when they become a wildlife corridor, enabling invertebrates and other creatures to move freely from habitat to forage and so have a chance to thrive. This is why Lote is working at a ‘whole-community’ level to create change.

Lote is delighted to be working with

  •  WI Brixham to distribute many packets of wildflower seed across the town, along with information cards, to ensure ‘pocket meadows’ are created far and wide.
  • Pride in Brixham to remodel one of the public gardens on the harbourside that they are caring for. Their ‘Bayview’ site will benefit from a new wildflower meadow area, improved access, and some new horticultural pollinator-friendly plants to ensure the garden continues to look attractive while the meadow establishes itself.
  • Willow artist, Vivienne Turner,  who will be hosting a willow-weaving workshop at the community allotment to create obelisks in order to support the growing of narrow-leaved everlasting pea – a particular favourite of many invertebrates.

Life on the Edge ‘LotE Legends’ scheme

Life on the Edge (LotE) is also running a scheme to encourage everyone to get involved and gardeners who send in a photo of themselves in their garden will be sent a plaque to say’ thank you’.  Check out; https://southdevon-nl.org.uk/wildlife-gardening/,

Stuart Riddle Life on The Edge Community Officer said “this is a great opportunity for gardeners to get their hands on this lovely publication that will guide them through the planting and growing process. We look forward to seeing lots of people on our upcoming events and  many more wildflowers in the area”
