Life on the Edge – Meet the species workshops: Orthoptera

This event is part of South Devon National Landscape’s Life on the Edge project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund

 

Join the Life on the Edge team and Buglife’s Professor Karim Vahed for a brief whistle stop tour of the South Wests Orthoptera (crickets, bush crickets and grasshoppers). This includes two of our Life on the Edge project target species.

Workshop one – online: South West Orthoptera webinar

 

Monday 9 September 2024 6pm – 7.30pm on Zoom

 

This online webinar will provide an introduction to Orthoptera and will cover their habitat, habits, and how to identify them. The webinar will also cover several apps that volunteers can use to help them identify and record their sightings.

Workshop two – field visit: Wembury Orthoptera hunt

 

Sunday 15 September 2024 1pm – 4pm

 

This workshop will provide a chance to develop Orthoptera ID skills!

 

During the session we hope to find as many different species of Orthoptera as we can identify – fingers crossed for some late Grey bush-crickets and for the Great Green bush-cricket. We will also be finding out more about managing habitats for the conservation of Orthoptera.

  • Event is aimed at people with some field survey experience that are interested in on-going recording
  • Meet at Wembury beach car park (National Trust car park charges apply)
