June 2024 News and Events

Coastal Heritage – exciting new dig!

The project has just entered its third year and has worked on 11 sites, carrying out geophysical and structural surveys, drone photogrammetry, vegetation management, interpretation, and consolidation.

A recent highlight  has been a dig on the ramparts of the Bolt Tail promontory fort near Hope Cove, a Scheduled monument dating back to the Iron Age, 800BC to 43AD. This wasn’t originally in the project plan but archaeologists had identified a risk to the ramparts of the monument from erosion due to increased visitor pressures and wetter weather.  Additional funding for the dig was secured from Historic England, the National Trust, Devon County Council and from the  ‘Farming in Protected Landscapes’ programme funded by Defra.

The finds included evidence of a steep sided ditch, earthworks, walls and revetments – part of the huge ramparts, which seem to have been built in 3 different phases,  a post hole, and several pieces of black-burnished ware from the late Iron Age / early roman period. There are two more digs planned during this last year of the project. See our website and social media posts for more details.

Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL)

Reopening of Hangar Marsh
One of 6 new orchard sites

John Yeoman Chairman of the panel recently attended the reopening of Hangar Marsh after extensive works. £20K of FiPl funds were granted  for a replacement section of boardwalk,, a new bird hide next to the pond, interpretation boards giving information about the reserve, and new leaky dams.
Orchard expert Charles Staniland visited 6 new orchard sites to check suitability for the iconic Dittisham Plum to thrive.Funding is still available for farmers and land managers. The panel makes decisions on FiPL funding over £5K.  We welcome queries from any farmer or landowner who may have a potential FiPL project. We always look to work with the applicant to produce the best and most comprehensive application, including initial site visits and discussions to see whether ideas can be grown into bigger projects, or bring on board neighbouring landowners.
