Extreme Rockpooling – South Sands Salcombe
Join South Devon National Landscape’s Estuary Officer Nigel Mortimer to explore some of the normally tidally hidden treasures off South Sands during one of the lowest predicted tides of the year – sponges, fish out of water, crabs in hiding and jewelled anemones, to name a few.

Know before you go

- No – dogs are not allowed on South Sands beach
- Mobility
- Short walk of under a mile
- Some climbing over seaweed covered rocks and clambering down/up a 3m shallow rock cliff
- Wheelchair access

- What to bring
- Please wear older outdoor clothing and dress for the weather (or dress for worse than forecast weather – better to be prepared!)
- Wear supportive, sturdy footwear that can get wet
- A waterproof torch if you have one
- Water (and snacks if required)
- Please DO NOT bring nets and anything you can’t afford to drop onto a rock or into saltwater
- Parking
- Can be limited and worth exploring the options online – otherwise use the National Trust’s Overbecks paid parking further up the hill
